  • 17 years in Fitness Center and Athletic Program Administration at Midvale Athletic Club, Brigham Young University, U.S. Air Force Academy, Villanova University, and Stanford University, and Feather River Fitness and Recreation.
  • Supervised athlete academic standards. BYU teams consistently had 3.0+ grade point averages. In 9 years we won the N.W.C.A. National Academic Championships four times and took 2nd place three times.

Administrative 

  • 1994-2000 Oversaw BYU staff, operations, and annual budgets over $250,000.00 directing and allocating funds towards scholarships, travel expenses, equipment, advertising, promotion, and marketing. Oversaw the maintenance of facilities, and purchased and maintained equipment..
  • Founded and Directed the "BYU Aloha Classic" Wrestling Tournament at BYU-Hawaii. Negotiating a $25,000 grant to launch and direct the "BYU Aloha Classic" which enabled BYU to participate at no cost and produced a positive net income.
  • Scheduled and supervised staff for the Midvale Athletic Club, Mark Schultz Grappling Camp, Brigham Young University, BYU Summer Sports camp and Mark Schultz Grappling Camps, Seminars, and Clinics.
  • Supervised staff and developed staff schedules in the instruction area for the Midvale Athletic Club, for Brigham Young University as Head Coach of a Div. I program, for the BYU summer Camp as Camp Director, for the 2001 Mark Schultz Grappling Camp as the Camp Director, and for Utah Valley State College as the Head Jiu-Jitsu Instructor.
  • Provided input on selection and evaluation of part-time instructors who worked as my assistants at the Midvale Athletic Club, Brigham Young University, and the Mark Schultz Grappling Camps.

Distinctions

  • 1996 UFC IX Ultimate Fighting Champion. Before the UFC introduced weight classes Mark was 5' 10" and weighed 213 lbs. Mark won by submission against UFC VIII Runner-up Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge in 12 minutes. Goodridge is a fearless Canadian Amateur Heavyweight Boxing Champion, a 4th degree Black Belt in Kuk Sul Won, and a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Martial Arts Cross Training. Goodridge was 6' 3" weighed in at 250 lbs. 

  • First Olympian to step foot inside the UFC Octagon. 

  • Prevented Ed Banach from becoming the 1st four-time NCAA Champion in history by defeating him 16-8 in finals of the 1982 NCAA Championships. Subsequently Mark was voted Outstanding Wrestler of the 1982 NCAA Championships. W.I.N. magazine ranked it 2nd greatest match in NCAA history. 

  • 1987 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year  

  • 1985 Moved up to 198 lbs to challenge the 1985 World Champion at 198 lbs in the finals of the National Open Freestyle Championships and won. 

  • First American in history to win an Olympic Gold Medal and Two World Championships.  

  • Set the Oklahoma University record for most victories in a season without a loss.

  • Oklahoma University Wrestling Team Captain 

  • Mark and Dave Schultz are the only brothers in the history of the United States to win both World and Olympic Wrestling Titles. 

  • Mark Schultz was the only 1984 Olympic Champion to win the 1985 World Championships and Dave Schultz was the only 1984 Olympic Champion to win the 1983 World Championships. An extra official had to be assigned to watch Mark and Dave through the 1984 Olympics when in back to back matches Mark broke the Turk's arm who was ranked #1 in the world and was disqualified from the match for excessive brutality, and Dave injured the Yugoslav's knee so bad he pinned himself.

  • July 13-18, 1988 was designated Mark Schultz Week in Susanville, California by Mayor David W. Foster.  

  • Started Wrestling as a High School Junior (Junior Year Record: 4-6) and won the California State Championships as a Senior.
